What is the Code Generator and how does it work?

The Code Generator is the recommended way to issue stamps. It runs on any device you already own — a phone, a tablet, or the computer at your counter — and generates a fresh QR code each time a customer needs a stamp.

Why it’s better than a printed code

A printed QR code never changes, so anyone can photograph it and use it again later. That is why printed codes are limited to one stamp per scan.

A generated code is different. Each one can only be redeemed once, and the screen it is displayed on refreshes regularly, so a photograph is of a code that has almost certainly already been spent. That means it can safely issue several stamps at once — the keypad offers 1 to 7, and the + opens a box where you can type any number up to 20.

If you reward customers by spend — a stamp for every $10, say — or your customers buy several items at a time, the Code Generator is the only method that handles it properly.

The repeat-scan waiting period still applies. It is set per program and defaults to 12 hours, and it is checked whichever way the stamp is issued — including a generated code. What the Code Generator changes is how many stamps one scan can be worth, not how often the same customer can collect. If a customer needs to collect twice inside the window, change the waiting period in your program settings or set it to zero.

Setting it up

1. Open the Companion App on the device you want to use and sign in.
2. Choose which store this device will be used in. Stamps issued from this device are recorded against that location, so your reports stay accurate.
3. Save the app to your homescreen when prompted. It then opens like any other app, with nothing to install from an app store.

Issuing a stamp

1. Tap the screen to generate a code.
2. To issue more than one stamp, open the keypad and choose how many first. The screen then reads “Scan for 3 Stamps”, so both you and your customer can see what is being given.
3. Your customer scans the code with their phone camera. They do not need the Flex Rewards app installed — the scan works either way.
4. The code counts down and expires. Tap again for the next customer.

Keeping staff out of your member list

If the device sits on the counter where staff use it all day, you can switch on QR Code Only mode in settings. The app then shows nothing but the code — your member list stays private, and there is less for staff to tap through.

You can also set a Device Exit Code, a 4-digit code required to leave Code Generator mode, so the device stays on the right screen.

What else the Companion App does

Beyond generating codes, the same app can add new members, look up an existing member by name, add or remove stamps manually, and redeem rewards.
