Downtown Austin ran a digital passport built around its Holiday Stroll, a seasonal event designed to bring visitors into downtown businesses over the festive period.

The program

Visitors collected stamps by scanning QR codes at participating downtown businesses, working toward a 15-stamp card. Completing the card earned entry into a grand prize draw, with a success message shown in the app at the moment the final stamp landed.

Two decisions shaped how it ran:

No scan limit in store. Rather than restricting how often someone could collect, the program was deliberately configured without a per-visit cap — the goal was footfall, not rationing.

Event attribution. The team wanted to know how many people signed up because of the Holiday Stroll itself, separating event-driven joins from ordinary downtown traffic.

Why a seasonal campaign suits a passport

A holiday campaign has a hard start and a hard finish. With printed passports that means a print run, a fixed list of venues, and no way to know what happened until it’s over.

Running it digitally meant the participating venue list could change without reprinting, results were visible while the campaign was still live, and the program could simply be paused once the season ended — then started again the following year without rebuilding it.

Also explored

The team asked about earning entries through actions beyond purchases — following the campaign on Instagram or TikTok, for example — as a way to widen participation beyond people already downtown.
